Max Roach Plus 4

This was the first album that Max Roach recorded after the death of Clifford Brown and Richie Powell. Kenny Dorham took the trumpet spot in the group and is heard here next to the great Sonny Rollins. Kenny Dorham plays beautifully and creates a nice counterpoint to Sonny who is on fire on all of these takes. These solos were transcribed in July of 2015.

This album is interesting for a few reasons. Finding Max Roach and Kenny Dorham playing Charlie Parker's music is nothing new for two former sideman of BIrd, but hearing all of that music in a chordless band is. It is also another nice example of the Hank Mobley/Kenny Dorham frontline in action. All in all, a nice set and a rare chance to hear KD in a chordless setting. These solos were transcribed in June 2015.

Kenny Dorham was the veteran on this front line, which also featured a young (and absolutely burning!) Hank Mobley. There are a number of really excellent recordings of these two together, but this is one of my favourites as well as being a classic from the Jazz Messengers catalog. All of the things that make KD one of the absolute greats are on display in these solos and as always every one is a clinic on turnarounds and ii-Vs. I transcribed these in May of 2015. Hope you enjoy!
